Vandkunsten is from the Middle Ages, in the 14th century there was a watermill, which from the dam - which today forms the square itself - led the water via wooden drains to Slotsholmen. In 1539, a pumping station was built on the site, which became Copenhagen's first waterworks, but with one of Copenhagen's countless changes, the water here became so polluted that the waterworks had to be shut down.
For years the place was a landfill, but after a call from Christian the 4th (1646-1699) it was paved here and it functioned from 1684 as a fish market and later as a flea market. Today, Vandkunsten is one of the city's oases with a cozy café and restaurant life. The street avoided both city fires in 1728 and 1795, respectively.
